Investigate Schweitzer
Missoula Independent, Thursday, September 18

Anytime Montana shows up in the New York Times, it can’t be good. East Coasters don’t want to hear about the positive aspects of mountain life—most of them are too afraid of bears or guns to ever come here. The same goes for Wyoming and Alaska.

So when the venerable Gov. Brian Schweitzer appeared in those noble columns as a Montana politician under fire for claiming to have tampered with the 2006 Senate race that elected friend Jon Tester, many in the Treasure State let out a collective sigh.

Gov let his ego do the talking

Daily Interlake, Sunday, September 14

It’s puzzling why Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer made the remarks he did in Philadelphia regarding the 2006 election, and some people are even more puzzled over what to do about it.

A Republican activist from Bozeman is demanding an investigation, alleging that Schweitzer’s remarks indicate he was “tampering” with the election that put Sen. Jon Tester in office over incumbent Republican Conrad Burns.

Schweitzer should have known better

Revelations of Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer’s wildly inappropriate remarks at an American Association for Justice convention in Philadelphia this past summer beg a number of questions, chief of which is: What could he possible have been thinking?

In His Own Words...

In a speech to a group of out-of-state trial lawyers, Governor Brian Schweitzer detailed his elaborate strategy to "turn some dials" and ensure that his friend and fellow Democrat, Jon Tester, won the closely contested race for US Senate in 2006.

Unfortunately for Montanans, this speech amounted to flat out admitting to his role in a campaign to defraud the public trust, and insulting and demeaning Montanans to the rest of the world in the process.

In his remarks, Governor Schweitzer boasted that he had election observers run off of polling places on Montana's reservations using threats of false imprisonment.  He also claimed to have interfered with the release of results from the Silver Bow County elections department, and claimed to have bullied the Associated Press into calling the race in Jon Tester's favor.

Criminal or Liar?
Now that his remarks have become public, Governor Schweitzer is trying to pass them off as a joke.  Sorry, Governor, but there's nothing funny about stripping away Montanans fundamental right to a free and fair election.

The reality is that Montanans now are faced with two choices:  either a governor who took criminal action to rig a close election, or a governor who is simply a liar.

A Grain Of Truth...
Soon after the Governor's remarks became public, media accounts revealed there may be some truth to Governor Schweitzer's remarks.  Read this report for details on an affidavit from November 2006, where an election

It's No Joke...
Generations of men and women have paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our right to vote.  It's a sacred trust that citizens depend on to preserve their safety and freedom.  Our right to vote free of interference or intimidation is one of the things that sets America apart as a leader in democracy, and has since this nation was founded.  It's hard to see the humor when the state's highest elected official proudly admits to eliminating that sacred right.
